Paper Cut

My work is centered around appealing yet disconcerting characters that exist in fun and colorful environments. I would describe my style as charming surrealism, often featuring characters with large vacant eyes and bodies distorted by perspective. I often use dramatic perspective and uneven proportions to warp my characters as an approach to my own struggles with body dysmorphia. Color is also a very important part of my work as I try to implement very vibrant unnatural colors to make up for how dull the world may be at times. It’s also a way to contrast the occasionally darker topics in my work. I feel like using colors you wouldn’t see in the real world helps separate my work from real life allowing my narratives to “exist in a different space” even though most are a direct response to reality. Through my use of color and perspective, I’m able to make scenarios in the real world more fun and lively. I find myself drawn to somewhat sad or mundane narratives that would normally be off-putting and making light of them with colorful, humorous visuals and childlike symbolism. This borderline children’s book style makes it easier for me to take on heavier pieces and allows room for someone to process the idea without making them upset in the process.
