Julian Schonfeld

Weave, Play, Rot

“A dying song leads all to the cesspit.”

Fascinated with grandiose tales and a tendency for social commentary and the occult, my creative outlets have found themselves at the intersection of fantastical world building, capitalist critique, and horror. To emphasize further built up frustrations within my commentary, I turn to glitch aesthetics and the unique perspective their juxtaposition can generate along with more traditional rendering techniques. A program’s inability to complete a function and the forceful nature of converting video to audio and then back to video along with the visuals that come with that process encapsulates my inability to express the frustration and critiques I feel on an everyday basis. As someone who is chronically online and upset at the broad idea of “late stage capitalism,” these glitch aesthetics then easily correlate into the numerous other digital inspirations I have, creating an amalgamation of video game, glitch, internet, and historically coded critiques. The hope is for the collage of distortion, online aesthetics, and historical reference to serve as a sufficient translation for the self doubt and loathing which motivates my processes.
